37 STAR FLAG with a GREAT STAR PATTERN
Mourning Flag for William Seine

1-37a

1867-1876 Nebraska Statehood, 37 Star American mourning flag displays a “Great Star” configuration with 4 single stars each standing guard on the four corners of the canton. Exhibiting a small black silk mourning ribbon attached to the field.

This exceptional antique American flag is quite rare and possesses one of the most sought after star patterns among collectors of fine Antique American Flags. This very exclusive mourning flag was created in commemoration of Pvt. William Seine over one hundred years ago. As a parade flag it may have been used at his funeral procession and later kept as a treasured heirloom. William Seine served as a Private in the 45th Infantry then transferred to Co O., October 1, 1865, mustered out at Nashville Tenn.

In 1867 Nebraska became the 37th state to be welcomed into the Union. Thirty-seven Star flags were limited to some degree in production when compared to flags preceding and following the Civil War, due to the fact flag makers were anticipating the addition of at least one or two more states expected to join the Union later that year. It was a usual practice for flag makers to produce flags with additional stars prior to them becoming official, which is why the 38 and 39 star flags were more prevalent in our nation’s 100- year anniversary celebration in 1876.
