44 Star Antique American Flag,
Wyoming Statehood, Circa 1890-1896

Antique American National Flag printed on glazed cotton exhibits 44 Stars in rows of 8-7-7-7-8 to form an attractive “hourglass” pattern with its stars in a tumbling arrangement within each row to give it a folksy appeal.

In 1869 Wyoming Territory legislators passed the Wyoming suffrage Act of 1869. It became the first place in the world to grant unrestrictive suffrage to women giving them the right to vote, hold public office, own and inherit property and the right of guardianship of minor children.

Wyoming was admitted to the Union on July 10, 1890 and became official July 4, 1891. Presidents Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison served under the Forty-four star flag, which remained the official star count until July 4, 1896 when Utah became the 45th state.

Description/Condition

44 Stars printed on glazed cotton in a folksy arrangement flowing out onto an “hourglass” pattern; good to fair condition for its period, the flag has an unyielding presence with it’s colors remaining strong but garnering a soft patina revealing it’s age; canton has a nice deep blue color with aged fading, 5” fabric separation center, ¼” hole between 2cd and 3rd lineal row center, 3rd lineal row 2cd star left 1/16” hole, vertical fold midway with 4” slight material separation; stars and stripes have a nice aged appearance- does have slight bleeding left side along the canton and several stars imprint center of the flag in the strips, light creases in the center, several pinholes and staining throughout; fly- material loss as pictured, some staining; left vertical dimension- 5 ½ ” material loss, ¼” round hole; framing process is pressure mounted using pre-washed 100% cotton (black) material over cotton batting and acid-free board; gunmetal grey frame with gold imprints gives the appearance of steel
