The Connecticut Cavalry Regiment Flag Sells for $ 12,000,000.00

The Connecticut cavalry regiment flag is the earliest surviving American flag with 13 red and white stripes.

The four flags brought on a Flag Day bidding battle at Sotheby's in New York City in June 2006. The telephone bidder captured the Virginia flags for a little more than $5 million and the Connecticut flag for about $12 million.

They are among perhaps 30 flags to survive the fight for independence.

The exhibit will consist of panels telling the story of the participants and histories of when the flags were captured along with a musket, sword and cavalry pistol.

"We don't want to overwhelm this exhibit with too many objects," said Erik Goldstein, curator of mechanical arts and numismatics for Colonial Williamsburg. "So we are keeping it simple."

There is no loan fee - only the cost of installing the exhibit, Hurst said. Installation estimates were not available Tuesday.

Following the exhibit, the flags will return to a private setting, he said.

Just how did Colonial Williamsburg capture the flags for the exhibit?

"Some initial inquiries were made to us through the owner's agent because of some existing connections," Hurst said.
