Antique 45-Star American parade flag, made of glazed cotton; the printed stars in the canton are arranged in a staggered pattern in lineal rows of 8-7-8-7-7-8, the 13 alternating red and white stripes represent the original 13 colonies. The colors are bold with a few areas containing slight discoloration, hoist and fly have some fraying, a few areas of fabric separation.
In 1847 the majority of pioneers that had settled in the valley of the Great Salt Lake Utah region were Mormons who originated from settlements farther east. Although the settlers petitioned Congress for entry into the Union, they would refuse the territory’s applications for statehood for over 40 years due to the practice of polygamy governing the pioneer’s religion- thought of as controversial by much of the nation. The church renounced polygamy in 1890, Congress lifted the objections, but it wasn’t until 1896 that the territory was accepted into the Union. On January 4th, 1896, Utah became the 45th state to join the Union and became official that same year on July 4th, 1896. The 45 Star Flag flew during the Spanish-American War and Presidents to serve under this flag was Grover Cleveland, William McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt.
The flag is pressure mounted; pre-washed cotton fabric over acid-free cotton batting covering the backboard, surrounded by a vintage wood frame, enclosed with UV protected glass.
